The Industrial Free Zones in the Dominican Republic can be defined as: Geographical areas where native or foreign companies can be established and its products or services are destined to the international market under the privileges of certain incentives that assure its development such as: Customs special controls, and Tax incentives. After passing the 299 Law, on April 23, 1969, the Free Zone Sector starts to develop in the Dominican Republic. The first one to be installed was " La Romana Free Zone" and later, " San Pedro de Macoris Free Zone", created by law in 1971 and built in 1972.

1) Public Free Zones: Administrated by the Fomento Industrial Corporation (Government agency).  

2) Private Free Zones: Administrated by Free Zone Operator Companies ( Private sector).  

3) Mixed Free Zones: Administrated by a non-profit organization
